Client situation

When Philippe & Nadine Van Laere started a business around textile and workwear in the early 90s, they could not imagine the success the business would amass.  However, after long careers and with their two children working in the business a succession strategy was needed.  Laurent, the oldest of the siblings, approached DCF to find a solution in the interest of all involved.

DCF's role

DCF approached the task with the required sensitivity, listening to each of the different family members – really trying to understand their needs.  It then set out to work, structuring a deal that would suit the needs of all involved.  This deal together with the technical valuation of the company allowed to settle the discussion around succession planning in a way favourable to all involved.  It also set the company up for continued growth and stability for the years to come.

Outcome

DCF succeeded where others stumbled.  Succession planning is often quite an emotional topic requiring strong listening skills and the ability to creatively shape solutions.  At Van Laere International we found a solution not only acceptable to the family members, but also setting the company up for long term success:

  • The financial structure of the company allows to continue and invest in growth.
  • The next generation is taking over the business – providing stability
  • Laurent, the older sibling is taking over as CEO, with Philippe his father retaining a coaching role
  • Governance was improved through independent board directors, providing an external view
  • Capabilities strengthened through recruiting professional managers in a number of key roles

DCF are great solution providers.  Listening carefully to all concerned.  Thinking out of the box around solution.  Then proposing a transaction where each of us could stand behind.
